"Prof. Dr. Irinel Popescu" Municipal Hospital Băilești is one of the oldest hospital establishments in southwestern Oltenia; given the repeated epidemics that occurred between 1800 and 1883 in the territory of Băilești commune, on August 15, 1888, the sub-prefect of the Balta district, local councilor Dr. Polizu, a deputy general director, and a representative of the Ministry of Health traveled to Băilești to select the site where the hospital would be built.
