How do we disinfect the air conditioner?

How do we disinfect the air conditioner?

Summers are getting hotter and hotter, and the air conditioner has become a reliable ally for each of us, whether we use it at the office or at home. The air conditioner filter must be cleaned or replaced regularly, depending on the frequency of use and the level of air pollution in the area where the air conditioning unit is located.

Periodic disinfection and cleaning of any climate control unit is vital for air quality, but it also contributes to increasing the unit's lifespan. The filters inside the unit are designed to trap dust, as well as other pollutants such as pollen and bacteria, and if they are not cleaned regularly, they can become clogged and collect moisture and even mold. How do we sanitize air conditioners? We will see below!

Step 1: Cleaning the outside of the unit

  1. Make sure the air conditioner is turned off;
  2. Disconnect the power source from the socket;
  3. Use a cloth dampened with water to clean the unit's casing;

Attention!

  • Do not clean the unit by spraying water directly onto it. Water that penetrates the unit can lead to electric shock or fire that could cause serious accidents.
  • Do not use chlorine or organic solvents such as paint thinner, acetone, or alcohol to clean the unit's surfaces.

Step 2: Cleaning the filter

The filter requires cleaning and disinfection every 6 months, or more often, when you notice either an unpleasant odor or that the air is not cold enough. The period between sanitizations may vary depending on usage and environmental conditions.

  1. Detach the air conditioner filter;
  2. Use a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner to remove any traces of dust or debris from the filter;
  3. Wash the filter using water and detergent. Let it soak for about 30 minutes;
  4. After a thorough rinse, let the filter air dry in a well-ventilated area;
  5. Reinstall the filter in the unit.

Attention:

  • Be careful not to damage the air conditioner filter during cleaning.
  • Do not use a hard brush or other cleaning utensils.
  • Avoid exposing the air filter to direct sunlight when letting it dry.

Step 3: Disinfecting components inside the unit

  1. Clean and disinfect the evaporator;
  2. With a slightly dampened cloth, carefully clean the fan fins;
  3. Disinfect the condensation tray.

Attention:

The water in the condensation tray is dirty and can develop cultures of bacteria and microorganisms. For this reason, it is essential to clean and disinfect it periodically.
