How can you efficiently clean sofas, rugs, and carpets? Effective methods for deep carpet cleaning!
The textile materials in our homes have the capacity to absorb dirt. Even if surfaces may appear uniformly dirty, dust may not be entirely visible, but pre-existing stains can become difficult to remove. Carpet cleaning and sofa cleaning are two essential processes to reduce the risk of allergic reactions and respiratory problems.
Regular vacuuming, performed weekly, is an essential part of basic textile and carpet maintenance. Over 90% of stains can be removed without a trace if they are treated immediately. Such a home cleaning routine will not only maintain a comfortable environment but will also bring multiple benefits to the health and well-being of the inhabitants.

In addition to moisture, sofas and chairs with textile areas, as well as carpets, absorb dirt. Cotton, linen, and other natural materials in carpets are particularly sensitive to the accumulation of moisture and dirt. That is why they are often blended with synthetic fibers, which improve durability and make maintenance easier.
Dirt can be liquid, greasy or oily, coffee, ink from pens, food, or muddy paw prints. Before making a purchase for your home, it is useful to keep in mind a few aspects regarding the type of fabric, whether we are talking about sofas, carpets, or wall-to-wall carpeting.

Effective methods for cleaning fabric sofas
To begin cleaning a fabric sofa, it is important to consult the manufacturer's recommendations or the sofa's care instructions. This will help you identify the right cleaning products for the respective material. Only after checking the manufacturer's instructions will you know for sure what types of cleaning products are suitable. If you prefer to use natural cleaning agents, then there are some household items that can work.
One is baking soda, which can be applied as a paste in a solution with water. First, put the solution on the stain, then let it dry for about 20 minutes. Then use the vacuum cleaner to remove the dried crystals and dirt. Regular cleaning with baking soda can also help remove odors from the sofa.
Vinegar is another natural product that can be used on the sofa to remove stains. Make a solution that is equal parts water and white wine vinegar. Use a clean, slightly damp white cloth and try to remove the stain. Finish cleaning with a clean cloth and water. This method can also be used for carpet cleaning.
Klintensiv Tip: If you prefer faster cleaning methods, you can always resort to professional products for stain removal and carpet cleaning.
Aspects to keep in mind when buying a new sofa or carpet
- If you choose a washable fabric, check whether the cover is machine washable or not, whether it can be removed, and how durable the zippers are.
- Keep in mind that solid upholstered frame parts cannot be detached for washing.
- If the fabric label only marked dry cleaning, ask for details on how this cleaning is recommended to be done. Obviously, you cannot take a sofa to the dry cleaner. This marking is often included on the label if the manufacturer does not trust the consumer's ability to wash the product surface.
- Zippers on cushions are not a sign that the covers are washable: the fabric may be washable, but the zippers can break or be damaged when attempting a fabric sofa cleaning procedure.
- Washing detachable parts can cause their shades to fade, and all parts attached to the frame will have a different color.
- Covers can also shrink when machine washed. Covers should always be ironed before reattachment.
How to properly clean the carpet?
Regular vacuuming of carpets is the first essential step to prevent the accumulation of dust, dirt, and dust mites. However, in addition to vacuuming, the carpet cleaning procedure is crucial for maintaining its appearance and hygiene.
Before starting the cleaning process, it is important to understand the characteristics of your carpet, such as the material, design, fiber length, and to consider the types of stains you are dealing with. These details influence the choice of the right cleaning method for your carpet.
Cleaning carpets over their entire surface is part of routine maintenance, thanks to which the carpet will be in good shape and have bright colors. A clean carpet not only looks good but also helps improve the air in your home. When cleaning carpets, it is not just about getting rid of visible stains, but also about deep cleaning the carpet.
Dry cleaning
Dry cleaning, whether we are talking about carpets or wall-to-wall carpeting, is perfect for carpets that are worn from normal home use and when they are visibly dirty. From specialized stores, you can purchase a special powder for dry carpet cleaning, with excellent absorption characteristics.
All you need to do is pour the powder evenly on the carpet, let it work according to the instructions, and then vacuum the entire textile surface. Dry cleaning is suitable for short-pile carpets. So, if you have a cotton carpet at home, you will have to choose another cleaning method, because dry cleaning is not suitable.
Wet cleaning
Wet cleaning or using a wet carpet detergent are appropriate options for most types of carpets and are considered more effective than dry cleaning because the detergents penetrate deeper into the carpet fibers.
The wet cleaning process involves using a solution composed of one part special detergent for wool cleaning and fifteen parts lukewarm water. This solution is applied to the carpet, and in areas with persistent dirt, a damp cloth can be used to remove it. It is important that after application, the carpet is left to dry completely.
A disadvantage of wet cleaning is the carpet's drying time. While dry cleaning does not require long drying periods and you can use the carpet immediately after cleaning, in the case of wet cleaning, it is necessary to wait for the carpet to dry completely, a process that can take up to 24 hours. For this reason, it is advisable to choose this type of carpet cleaning when you know you will be away from home for at least a day.
Steam cleaning
You can also clean the carpet with steam. For this type of cleaning, steam heated to 180°C at a pressure of 8 Bar is used. The process works through a combination of hot water with detergent, which is injected into the carpet. The dirt is then removed by a special vacuum cleaner. The carpet steam cleaning process is provided by specialized companies.
However, for some types of carpets, none of these methods are suitable. These carpets must be approached specifically. This mainly concerns Persian and wool carpets.
Cleaning carpets according to material
Carpet cleaning must be adapted according to the material they are made of, to prevent damage and to achieve the best results.
Do not use any chemical product to clean Persian carpets. Gall soap, lukewarm water, and a sponge are enough to clean them. Apply foam to the carpet and clean it by smoothing in the direction of the fibers. Then brush lightly and vacuum the carpet.
Wool carpets are very sensitive to high temperatures. Do not expose them to direct sunlight or hot water, as the carpet will change color or shrink. When cleaning the wool carpet, use only cleaning products that are specifically designed for wool. Frequent vacuuming will remove solid dirt and dust and will also extend the interval between wet cleanings.

How to remove stains from the carpet?
Besides chemical cleaning products, when you start a carpet cleaning process following the occurrence of stains, you can help yourself with "grandmother's advice," meaning to use the products you have in the kitchen. For the process to be successful, you must hurry – the sooner you do it, the better the result. It is important to prevent stains from penetrating the carpet.
Coffee and tea stains
Coffee and tea can damage light-colored carpets. The good news is that they can be cleaned quite easily with mineral water and alcohol. Of course, provided you act quickly, immediately after the unfortunate accident occurs. Dry the stain and then apply a little lemon juice, a little salt, or soap on it. When the stain dries, it is necessary to use a detergent for carpet cleaning.
Wine stains
A carpet stained with wine must be cleaned quickly. Blot the wine with paper towels, then pour mineral water. After it has been absorbed, clean with water and detergent.
Grease stains
You can remove grease from the carpet by letting it soak into something else. Put a napkin on the carpet and press it. Some of the grease will be absorbed into the napkin. Instead of a napkin, you can pour flour on the grease stain. Don't forget to remove the flour by vacuuming and then clean the carpet with water and detergent.
Wax stains
If you are passionate about candles, then it has surely happened to you at least once that wax dripped on the carpet. Even wax can be easily removed. First, stretch the wax with a piece of ice, and then apply a plastic bag over it. Clean and crush the solid wax well and extract the small pieces with a vacuum cleaner. Then place a cloth over the stain and press with the iron when it absorbs all the wax.

How can we protect upholstered sofas and carpets?
- Do not place a sofa in direct sunlight because the fabric colors will fade from UV radiation.
- Make sure no door rubs against the upholstery or carpet.
- Do not place a sofa directly in front of a radiator. High temperatures will damage the materials. Furniture placed next to a radiator also accumulates dust.
- Synthetic fibers can easily charge with static electricity. When the heating is on and the indoor air becomes drier, these fibers begin to accumulate dust and static electricity. Especially in cold weather, they will discharge an unpleasant electric shock.
Furniture must be treated in an appropriate, gentle way so that it lasts as long as possible in your home. Here is how you can increase its lifespan:
- Do not sit on the armrest of a sofa; this can damage the joints.
- If you move furniture, grab it by the bottom edge of the sofa, do not pull on the upholstery.
- Avoid all sharp objects near the sofa. Do not sit on the sofa with wet clothes or clothes that are not colorfast.
