  2. Personal hygiene rules
  3. What can be the consequences of neglecting personal hygiene?

There are numerous factors that contribute to personal hygiene. Some are obvious, such as using water and soap. By following a few personal hygiene rules we can considerably improve our well-being. What are the benefits of maintaining rigorous hygiene and what risks do we face if we neglect certain aspects, we will see below!

1. Why is personal hygiene important?

Maintaining personal hygiene is necessary and important for several reasons: personal, social, health-related, psychological, or simply as a way of life. It also helps prevent the development and spread of infections, diseases, and unpleasant odors.

Most people are very aware of the most important personal hygiene rules because:

  • We are taught about the importance of hygiene from a young age.
  • We might be discriminated against at school for a one-time or persistent hygiene issue. It may have even been a problem wrongly linked to hygiene by others – such as lice.
  • It is considered a way to make us more attractive to the opposite sex.
  • We are aware of the health issues that can develop as a result of poor personal hygiene.

Our body image

Image influences self-esteem, confidence, and motivation. Those who already have low self-esteem and especially those with depression often neglect body hygiene, which perpetuates the problem of poor body image.

Many forms of modern media, including magazines, fashion, TV, film, and the internet, present a certain body image as "acceptable" or "expected." Young children and teenagers are particularly influenced by this; physical appearance being the ultimate factor by which to judge and be judged.

Social reasoning

By ensuring we permanently follow the rules regarding personal hygiene, we are more certain that we project a positive body image that reflects our personalities.

Children should be taught very early about the importance of hygiene and the most important personal hygiene rules for children to keep themselves and others healthy and to reduce the risk of being bullied at school.

Health reasons

Poor hygiene can lead to poor health. If you have a cut, the wound must be properly cleaned and bandaged; this can help reduce the risk of infection and pain.

Conditions such as lice or fungal infections must be treated immediately to prevent further infections and spreading them to others.

Hand hygiene cannot be overemphasized, as this simple action can prevent the development of a multitude of diseases and disorders. Many people "forget" to wash their hands after using the toilet or before handling food; this can cause many potentially serious illnesses.

Psychological issues

By being well-presented, clean, and tidy, people can feel more confident, especially in social situations. Our chances of succeeding either in the workplace, in social settings, or even with the opposite sex can be altered by following a few personal hygiene rules.

Maintaining hygiene practices helps reduce health-related risks, but just as importantly, it affects how we and others perceive ourselves and can influence our levels of confidence and self-esteem, which can affect many aspects of our lives.

2. Personal hygiene rules

Practicing good hygiene is beneficial for overall physical and mental health and means more than just being clean. Keeping the entire body clean from head to toe not only helps prevent diseases and infections caused by harmful bacteria but can also boost your self-esteem. We tend to feel better when we take care of ourselves. There are many personal hygiene habits to incorporate into your daily routine to ensure you keep yourself and your surrounding environment hygienic.

Hand hygiene

Wash your hands several times a day! Hands are our primary tools, and we touch hundreds of things every day without thinking twice. These surfaces host a multitude of germs, and we can easily transfer these microbes to other surfaces, or, worse, contaminate ourselves with them. The solution is simple; hand hygiene must be strictly followed.

UNICEF lists several examples of situations where personal hygiene rules for children and adults must be applied:

  • after handling trash
  • before and after eating
  • before and after handling food
  • after touching animals
  • after spending time in public spaces
  • after blowing your nose
  • after changing diapers

And these are just a few of the times when you should wash your hands. In general, if your hands come into contact with something that may have germs on it, sanitization is mandatory.

Hand hygiene means more than splashing with water for a few seconds. Whether you have eaten food, used the toilet, or entered someone's house, sanitization is always done with soap and water.

Soap is important because it traps grease and germs on your hands. When you rinse the soap with water, it removes the germs with those soapy bubbles.

Correct hand hygiene lasts at least 20 seconds, but if you can, scrub your hands well for about 40–60 seconds. If using hand sanitizer, practice the same techniques for 20–30 seconds. (Source)

Dental hygiene

Brushing your teeth is an important part of your oral hygiene routine and one of the most important personal hygiene rules. Daily brushing and cleaning are important because they remove plaque. If plaque is not removed, it accumulates and can cause cavities and gum disease. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day. Toothbrushes should be replaced every 3–4 months or sooner when the bristles wear out or are visibly dirty.

Body hygiene

Millions of sweat glands cover the human body. When bacteria break down sweat, the process creates an unpleasant odor or scent. Body hygiene helps prevent skin irritation as well as eliminate the bacteria that cause bad odors. Washing your hair removes oil and keeps a person looking clean and fresh.

It is advisable to shower or bathe daily, using soap and water to remove dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria. Special attention should be paid to areas that accumulate more sweat, such as the armpits, between the toes, and the groin area.

Also, hair should be washed with shampoo at least once a week, or more if necessary, this being one of the most important personal hygiene rules for your hair.

Nail hygiene

Nail hygiene is part of hand hygiene. Nails are made up of layers of a protein called keratin. In certain respects, nails can tell a lot about our overall health. They grow on average by 1 mm per week, unless there are nutritional issues or medical conditions that hinder this. The purpose of nails is to protect our fingertips and toes from trauma and to help us pick things up. It is very important to take care of your nails and keep them clean.

Using sanitized tools to trim nails and keeping them short is one of the best ways to ensure that dirt cannot gather under them. Scrubbing the underside of the nails with a nail brush should be part of your personal hygiene routine.

3. What can be the consequences of neglecting personal hygiene?

Neglecting these personal hygiene rules affects one's outward appearance. Stained clothes, unkempt hair, long and dirty nails, and oily or blemished skin are signs of a lack of personal care.

People often associate poor hygiene with unpleasant body odor, bad breath, or visible signs of dirt. In some cases, rashes, oily skin, or other appearance flaws that can be prevented or treated may also be examples of poor hygiene.

Poor mental health

Personal hygiene is linked to mental health in two ways. First, a dirty appearance can cause social and professional isolation. Feelings of loneliness and failure caused by this isolation can harm mental health and lead to chronic depression or social anxiety.

In some cases, the progression between poor hygiene and mental health problems is reversed. People with depression may stop caring about hygiene practices. In these cases, the lack of cleanliness is a symptom of a mental disorder, not the cause of it.

Increased health risks

Poor hygiene can increase the risk of physical illness. These are not diseases you catch by accident, but rather illnesses that stem from a lack of personal cleanliness.

Many of the conditions that damage the skin surface and the gastrointestinal tract stem from improper personal hygiene practices, wearing dirty clothes, and not washing your hands before handling food. The list of hygiene-related diseases includes parasitic fungal infections that will remain in or on the human body until treated.

How are infectious diseases transmitted?

Infectious diseases can occur when disease-causing microorganisms (“pathogens”) enter the body. Not all microorganisms are pathogens. In fact, most microorganisms we encounter daily are harmless, while others play an essential role in maintaining health.

Pathogens can cause disease in several ways. They can release toxins into the body, prevent cells from performing their normal functions, or multiply rapidly, thereby hindering the normal functioning of organs. However, all these dangers can be prevented extremely simply, just by following a few personal hygiene rules.

Conclusion

Maintaining personal hygiene has positive effects on a person's social life and their physical and mental health. Body hygiene simply means taking care of the body and keeping it clean and healthy. Developing and maintaining a hygiene routine is essential for having a healthy body and mind.
